Since launching SelectShip this June, we’ve been thrilled with the results. Early adopters have seen meaningful improvements across shipping metrics:
1.1 days faster average transit times
15% average transportation cost savings through budget friendly base rates and maximized surcharge avoidance.
The data is clear that SelectShip continues to outperform non-SelectShip services, demonstrating strong progress. The collaboration between our Operations, Transportation, and IT teams is proving to give us the desired results.
Our SelectShip Promise
Overall, we’ve seen marked improvements which translate directly to our end-goal with this tool: a better end-customer shipping experience—faster deliveries, fewer unexpected costs, and more predictable transit times. We’re incredibly pleased with this service and what it provides for our customers.
Like all shippers in our industry, we are monitoring carrier performance closely during peak season to ensure it’s a successful holiday. But we also recognize there are larger shifts in the transportation industry; we see SelectShip as a tool to help our partners meet those changes with fluidity.
Key Highlights:
All four SelectShip service levels have met or exceeded their respective 95% On Time Delivery (OTD) goals over the past several weeks.
Several service disrupting events were mitigated effortlessly in the SelectShip platform to ensure performance did not degrade.
Challenges our team has faced include managing and onboarding a broader network of carriers.
Operational Enhancements:
Implementation of a “mis-tendered shipment” report defined by shipments that have no movement past label created stage after 3 business days.
Additional quality control and sign-off procedures to ensure every package is handed to the right carrier.
Updated carrier pickup times and rollover schedules in the SelectShip platform to better align scan and pickup schedules.
Prioritization rules for the release of time-sensitive shipments.
Optimizing carrier selection rules to award shipments where performance is the best.
Ongoing work with carriers to identify root causes of failed deliveries or lost packages.
Improved Dangerous Goods (DG) process where DG shipments are diverted to a dedicated station for system directed labeling ensuring compliance and accuracy regardless of the final carrier.
Outlook
Our team will continue to monitor performance and implement any updates needed to further strengthen SelectShip’s On Time Delivery rate. As with most things, peak season is the ultimate stress test, and we working to solidify it as the smart choice moving forward.
While unforeseen events such as weather disruptions or carrier delays are inevitable, SelectShip continues to demonstrate strong reliability through agile carrier management. As the shipping landscape becomes increasingly dynamic, SelectShip enables DCL to further diversify its carrier network—giving end-customers a cost-effective, fast, and reliable shipping solution.
To put a fine point on why we are leaning into carrier diversification, the map below shows the variance of carriers used over the Black Friday weekend. SelectShip Standard uses 7 different carriers (shown each as different colors on the map), 63% of shipments are with carriers we did not use a year ago.
