When shipping internationally, countries are starting to expect country-specific HTS Codes. DCL has updated our systems to accommodate this, and customers can update HTS codes by country in their item catalog.

The Difference Between HS Codes, HTS Codes and Schedule B Number

Harmonized System (HS) Codes are an international classification system. Internationally, these codes consist of six digits and represent the product that is shipping. Although the HS code is 6 digits, countries can add up to 4 digits to the end to comprise a country specific HTS code. These country specific HTS codes are used by importing countries to assess duties and taxes. As such, they must be accurately reflected in the trade documentation.

In addition to the HTS code, when exporting from the US a 10-digit Schedule B number, which includes an additional four digits to the HS code, is may be required. The schedule B number is designated by the US Census Bureau, as opposed to the US Customs and Border Patrol, and may actually be different than the HTS code used for that product when bringing it in to the US.

Note: Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes are used for importing into all countries. Schedule B codes may be required for exporting from the US, in addition to the destination countries specific HTS code, so that the US Census Bureau can collect statistical data on commodities leaving the US. The schedule B number is required in all instances where the value of the export exceeds $2500 USD, or a license is required.

What's Changing with HTS Codes at DCL?

DCL has made updates to our programming to allow the ability for customers to update HTS codes by country in their item catalog.

Before this update, DCL was limited to accepting only one HTS code for Canada and one for the rest of the world, per part number.

How do I Change to a Country-Specific HTS Code?

If you need to update or change an HTS code, you must make that adjustment in your item catalog under the HTS code and HTS code country columns and send it to your Account Manager.

Always alert your account manager to any updates made to your item catalog. This is critical to ensure smooth fulfillment.

How Long Before Shipments Will Reflect The Change?

Once you send your Account Manager the updated Item Catalog, you can expect the change to be done within 24 hours.

How DCL Supports These Changes

DCL updates our systems to remain in compliance with the latest regulatory requirements and industry standards. By accommodating country-specific HTS codes, DCL can provide its clients with a more tailored and efficient service while also minimizing the risk of errors or delays in the shipment process.
