If a DCL customer does not have an entity in Canada, wants to be importer of record, and wants to ship to Canada, they will need to apply for an NRI and Business Revenue number with UPS.
What is an NRI Business Number?
NRI stands for non-resident importer. All US shippers importing into Canada need a non-resident import business number. This is a unique 15-digit number companies in Canada use to transact with government agencies.
How to Apply for UPS NRI Number
1. Reach out to the transportation team ([email protected]) and cc your account manager. A member of the Transportation team will provide you with documentation to fill out. Once complete, return the paperwork to the Transportation and we will do the leg work in the background to set up the account with UPS.
2. You will receive an email from the Canadian authorities with shipping instructions on how to process your NRI shipments into Canada. Once received, also forward this email to the Transportation Team. We will connect with our UPS representative to ensure that your new Customer NRI Number is linked to your DCL account.
4. You will need to work with your team to test orders to validate them for accuracy. Only once these tests are approved, can you start shipping small package shipments to Canada.
