If a DCL customer does not have an entity in Canada, wants to act as importer of record, and wants to ship to Canada, they will need to apply for an NRI and Business Revenue number with UPS.

What is an NRI Business Number?

NRI stands for non-resident importer. All US shippers importing into Canada need a non-resident import business number. This is a unique 15-digit number companies in Canada use to transact with government agencies.

How to Apply for UPS NRI Number

1. Reach out to the transportation team ([email protected]) and cc your account manager if you are interested in obtaining an NRI Brokerage account. The below steps need to be taken to obtain an NRI Brokerage account.

  1. Fill out UPS Canada Brokerage Customs Questionnaire. Once fully filled out return complete paperwork to Transportation Team. They will then continue the legwork to set up the account with UPS.

    1. You will receive an email from the Canadian authorities with shipping instructions on how to process your NRI shipments into Canada. Once received, also forward this email to the Transportation Team. We will connect with our UPS representative to ensure that your new Customer NRI Number is linked to your DCL account.

  2. Register on the CARM Portal. See "Registering on CARM Client Portal for NRI" for further detail.

    1. Complete Delegation of Authority request. This will be sent to customer in CARM portal

    2. Post financial security to CBSA, also through CARM.

Once account is fully setup, the Integration Manager will create a test order to validate accuracy of the commercial invoice and order detail. Only once these tests are approved, can you start shipping small package shipments to Canada.
