Inventory and Labeling Specifications

Everything you need to know to send your products to DCL facilities.

These are the requirements for inbound inventory, including label specifications for different types of packaging.

Inventory that meets the specifications outlined below will be considered conforming when it arrives at DCL.

Any items that do not meet the following specifications will be considered non-conforming and may be placed on hold. To add any necessary labels, please get in touch with your Account Manager.

Individual Unit Label Requirements:

  • Each consigned product SKU must have a specific human-readable and barcoded Part Number.

  • Each product SKU label must have a human-readable and barcoded Part Number, and if needed,

    UPC.

  • Serialized, lot-coded, or expiration-dated product SKUs, each unit label must have a human-readable and barcoded Serial Number, lot number, or expiration date.

  • Any change requests to specific ordering SKU's labels must be sent in writing to the site DCL Director of Operations. If the change is accepted in writing by DCL, your vendor can begin shipping in the new approved labeling for all future shipments and must discontinue shipping with old labels.

  • All barcodes must be scannable (do not mark through barcodes).

  • Individual Sellable Units: Within a Master Carton (or if the Master Carton is 1 Sellable Unit), each Sellable Unit must display a UPC-A barcode on the outside of the unit.

Inner Carton Label Requirements:

  • Each ordering SKU must have a human-readable and barcoded Part Number.

  • Each inner carton label must have a human-readable and barcoded Part Number and, if needed, UPC.

  • For serialized, lot-coded, or expiration-dated product SKUs, each inner carton label must have a human-readable and barcoded Serial Number, lot number, or expiration date.

  • Each inner carton label must have the carton quantity listed.

  • If available, a 13-digit GTIN shall be provided on the carton label.

Master Carton Label Requirements:

  • Special handling notations must be on any and all cartons when applicable.

  • Examples include but are not limited to: Fragile, This End Up, Do not clamp on sides, Protect from heat, Do not stack more than X units high, and Dangerous Goods warning labels.

  • Each product SKU must have a specific human-readable and barcoded PartNumber.

  • Each master carton label must have a human-readable and barcoded Part Number and, if needed, UPC.

  • For serialized, lot-coded, or expiration-dated product SKUs, each master carton label must have a human-readable and barcoded Serial Number, lot number, or expiration date.

  • Each master carton label must have the carton quantity listed.

  • If available, a 14-digit GTIN shall be provided on the carton label.

  • All packaging must adhere to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) packaging requirements. See nmfta.org for more on packaging requirements and classifications.

Pallet Requirements:

  • Special handling notations should be on any and all pallets when applicable. Examples include but are not limited to Fragile, Do not clamp on sides, Protect from heat, Do not double stack, etc.

  • Each ordering SKU will have a specific human-readable and barcoded Part Number.

  • Each pallet label should have a human-readable and barcoded UPC for every shipment.

  • If the inventory is serialized, each pallet label should have human-readable and barcoded serial numbers for each part inside the pallet of every shipment.

  • Each pallet label should have a quantity listed for every shipment.

  • If available, a 14-digit GTIN should be provided on the pallet label.

Pallet Label Placement:

  • Single-stop destination truckload shipments must have pallet labels that contain the exact same information applied on at least two sides, 2” from any edge of the Pallet.

  • LTL or multi-stop shipments must have pallet labels that contain the exact same information applied to all four sides of the Pallet. Additional placement is noted below with dotted lines.

  • Each label must be 4-6” from the top of the pallet. For pallets that are greater than 60” high, the label

    should be placed 32-36” from the bottom of the Pallet.

  • If the Pallet is wrapped or covered (i.e., shrink-wrapped) the label must be placed upon the outside surface of this covering.

Packing List Requirements:

  • Packing lists must be included for each inbound shipment and must be placed in a removable envelope/pouch on the outside of the lead pallet or carton.

  • Packing list must match the contents of the shipment.

  • Packing lists for partial shipments must only detail what actually shipped.
